While our focus will be primarily on Apple, it’s difficult to isolate one company as the Subcommittee staff report ended up lumping the four into one bucket. The update kicks off with my overall thoughts on the report. The focus then turns to six major holes in the Subcommittee staff’s logic and rationale when it came to classifying Apple as a monopoly. We conclude with a look at Apple’s initial response to the report and what I think will be the next steps moving forward.

A new PR guerrilla warfare tactic has been unveiled by a handful of companies in the form of a “social-welfare organization” aimed at pressuring Apple to make significant changes to the way it conducts business. We kick off today’s update by comparing Apple’s headphones revenue to Spotify revenue. The discussion goes over the methodology and math behind my AirPods and Beats revenue estimates. We also examine the most interesting takeaway from AirPods surpassing Spotify in terms of revenue. The discussion then turns to my estimate for the size of the AirPods installed base (the number of people using AirPods) as of the end of December 2019. We conclude with my thoughts on how Apple’s Beats acquisition is taking on a very different feel given the current renaissance surrounding wireless headphones.
