We kick off today’s update with my thoughts on Apple’s 15-page response to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC). The entity is conducting an inquiry into app marketplaces. My expectation is that quite a few of the arguments found in Apple’s response will be utilized by the company in its upcoming trial against Epic Games. The discussion then turns to three things Apple accomplishes by expanding its Independent Repair Provider Program. We conclude with why it is appropriate to treat news of Foxconn contemplating electric vehicle contract manufacturing in the U.S. with some hesitation.

We go over my thoughts on CAID and what I think Apple’s response will be as it pertains to CAID potentially going around Apple’s App Tracking Transparency policy. The update concludes with Google cutting Google Play fees to 15% for the first $1 million of revenue. We discuss the motivation for such a change and why Apple decided to approach small businesses and App Store revenue share differently a few months ago.

We go over why I don’t think Nikkei is portraying the full story. The discussion then turns to the iPhone 12 mini and what continues to look like a big problem. We conclude with news that iPhone 12 production will begin shortly in India. The country is shaping up to be a major variable in the iPhone’s growth story over the next five to 10 years.
